President Ernest Bai Koroma on Thursday 23rd
October also received at State House the German Coordinator on Ebola Ambassador
Walter Lindner.
Mr. Lindner was in the country to do a realistic assessment on
the country’s response in combating the Ebola outbreak.
President Koroma expressed appreciation that
Ambassador Lindner had not only limited his engagement with officials in the
capital but has also extended his outreach activities to the provinces. He
informed the German envoy that the outbreak was announced in May this year and
that government has shown continued commitment with a lot of resources exerted
in the fight against Ebola.
“We have done what we could do under the
circumstances and we are still fighting,” he said. The president also expressed
the need for the required bed capacity to at least one thousand beds and added
that the laboratories are still not much as expected. “We still need
laboratories that can handle up to 600 samples per day.”
President Koroma underscored the importance of
human resources and logistical support that is required to facilitate and bring
in much needed items to support the entire process. He called for the
appropriate training to doctors, nurses, clinicians and surveillance officers
to contain the spread of the virus. “Training and human resource is key in this
fight,” he emphasized.
Ambassador Walter Lindner stated that he was in
the country to see how Germany can help to support the fight against Ebola and
work together to see a fruitful engagement in the fight against Ebola.
Following his assessment of the actual needs of the country, Mr. Lindner
promised to help Sierra Leone pass this crisis by bringing support and
logistics to boost the fight against Ebola.
